If you've ever come into our store and started talking about bourbon with us, you've probably heard us bring up Missouri bourbon pretty quickly.

And usually, the reaction is the same.

"Wait... Missouri makes bourbon?"

What Actually Makes Something Bourbon

A lot of people still think bourbon has to come from Kentucky. We get it. Kentucky has built a strong reputation over the years. But the truth is, bourbon just has to be made in the United States and follow a few specific rules. It needs at least 51 percent corn, has to be aged in new charred oak barrels, and bottled at 80 proof or higher. Nowhere in that definition does it say Kentucky.

So no, it doesn't have to come from Kentucky. And honestly, some of the most interesting bourbon we're seeing right now is coming out of Missouri.

Missouri has over 50 different distilleries and over 100 brands sourced from those distilleries, and a lot of them are doing really incredible work. The only problem is most people haven't tried them yet.
